Pembient Newsletter: PembiCoin — Biofabricated Horn on the Blockchain

The August 23, 2017 email blast announcing PembiCoin — Pembient's tokenized biofabricated-horn ICO — explicitly positioned against John Hume's auction two days earlier.

On August 23, 2017 — two days after John Hume's online rhino horn auction launched — Pembient sent an email newsletter announcing PembiCoin, a blockchain-based token redeemable for a gram of biofabricated horn in September 2022. Matthew Markus framed the announcement as a deliberate alternative to Hume's pro-trade approach.

The newsletter is the single sharpest moment in the archive where the substitution and pro-trade camps speak past each other in real time. Both share the underlying claim that legal supply will save the rhino. They disagree fundamentally on what "legal supply" means: real horn from ranched rhinos for Hume; biofabricated horn for Pembient.
